UCLA football back on track after 21-14 victory against Utah

A week after throwing four interceptions against Cal, redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley looked poised in the pocket for UCLA on Saturday. Hundley had no interceptions and completed 15 of 21 passes as UCLA defeated Utah 21-14 at the Rose Bowl.

With the win the Bruins improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-12.

Hundley got the team on the board first with a 12-yard touchdown run on a fake hand-off.

Later in the first quarter, Hundley completed a 64-yard pass to redshirt junior receiver Shaquelle Evans to give UCLA the lead, 14-7. Redshirt senior running back Johnathan Franklin capped off the scoring with a 3 yard run in the third quarter, his first touchdown since UCLA’s game against Nebraska.

Utah’s first points of the game came courtesy of a muffed punt by redshirt freshman receiver Steven Manfro. The Utes recovered the fumble in the end zone but seven points was all they could muster in the first half.

Freshman quarterback Travis Wilson got the start but was inconsistent for Utah, showing flashes of promise followed by typical freshman mistakes.

Coming off of a sloppy, penalty-laden game against the Golden Bears, the Bruins cleaned up their act against the Utes today. UCLA committed only 7 penalties for 43 yards.

“These are the kind of games that build character. “¦ These are the tough games you love,” UCLA coach Jim Mora said after the win on FOX.
