Both men’s and women’s UCLA tennis teams had their first experience of the year representing the Blue and Gold with mixed results.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association men’s and women’s All-American Championships were held over the last week and UCLA had a total of 11 participants in both tournaments.
The most success the Bruins experienced was in the main draw of the women’s doubles tournament.
The duo of sophomores Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton, who were seeded fourth in the bracket, paired for a run that saw them make it to the semifinals before losing to top-seeded USC in straight sets. The Trojans went on to win the doubles draw.
Meanwhile, sophomore Marcos Giron had the best showing of the week for the men’s side. Giron made it to the third round of the main singles draw before falling to Ohio State’s Peter Kobelt 6-3, 6-2.
On the way to the his eventual defeat, the unseeded Giron took out Duke’s Raphael Hemmeler, who made it into the main draw by winning his qualifying bracket. In the second round, Giron defeated the No. 5 seed in straight sets.
Both Bruin teams will continue their offseason play next week in the ITA Regional Championships. The women will begin play Thursday, Oct. 18 and the men start Friday, Oct. 19.
