Three general education clusters are now open to second-year students, university officials announced today.
GE clusters are designed for first-year students, and fulfill multiple GE requirements through an interdisciplinary year-long course, according to the program’s website.
The three courses open to second-year students are:
- GE Cluster 26A: Poverty and Health in Latin America
- GE Cluster 72A: Sex from Biology to Gendered Society
- GE Cluster 80A: Frontiers of Human Aging
“There has been a lot of talk over the last 15 years about including sophomores (in the cluster courses),” said Gregory Kendrick, director of the freshman cluster program and a professor of history.
Fewer first-year students than expected enrolled in three of the cluster courses for the fall, Kendrick said.
“We thought it would be a good opportunity (to open it up to second-year students),” he added.
UCLA faculty and officials involved with the program will reevaluate at the end of the year to see if second-year students can continue to enroll in cluster courses in the future, Kendrick said.
