UC Regents approve preliminary funding for new center at David Geffen School of Medicine

SAN FRANCISCO ““ The UC Board of Regents approved about $4 million for the development of a proposed Teaching and Learning Center at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

The new center aims to better accommodate student learning at the David Geffen School of Medicine with modern instructional space, said Dr. A. Eugene Washington, dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine.

The 120,000-square-foot building is expected to be built at the intersection of Le Conte Avenue and Tiverton Drive, according to a UC report.

The $3.96 million approved today, however, is only the initial cost for the project, which is estimated to cost a total of $120 million and will be paid for by private donors, according to a report from the UC Office of the President.

The regents must formally approve the project before UCLA officials spend beyond the initial $3.96 million.

UCLA officials are expected to seek formal approval at the next Board of Regents meeting in November once they finalize a detailed proposal for the project, said Patrick Lenz, UC vice president of budget and capital resources.
