University police investigating armed robbery of UCLA student

University police are investigating an armed robbery of a UCLA student on Veteran Avenue Thursday night.

At about 11:20 p.m., the student was walking north on Veteran Avenue when a man came up to him from behind, according to a police report released Friday. The man grabbed the student’s laptop and checked to see if he had any other valuables.

He then ran east on Strathmore Drive and got into a red four-door Toyota, the report stated.

The man was holding a sharp object that may have been a knife, according to the report.

No one sustained any injuries during the incident.

The man is described in the report as Hispanic, 22 to 27 years old, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 1 inch tall and 150 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and dark blue jeans at the time of the robbery.

This is the third time this year an armed robbery or attempted robbery occurred in Westwood. In May, three men armed with a gun and a taser attempted to rob a student on Strathmore Drive. In April, a student’s cellphone was stolen at gunpoint on Midvale Avenue.

Police suggest that students walk and park in well-lit areas and not become distracted by music or cellphones.

When confronted by a robber, students should comply with the robber’s demands and get a detailed description of the robber.

The robbery is currently under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident can call UCPD at (310) 825-1491.
