PASADENA “”mdash; A duel between dual-threat quarterbacks has turned UCLA’s home opener into a shootout that is tied 24-24 at the half.
The Bruins’ quarterback Brett Hundley is faring slightly better than his counterpart. In his first game at the Rose Bowl, the redshirt freshman has led UCLA to four scoring drives. Hundley directed an error-free half, completing 13 of 17 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Two of the scores went to redshirt senior receiver Joseph Fauria, and the other came on a 49-yard completion to redshirt freshman receiver Steven Manfro.
An earlier touchdown pass was waved off because of an offensive pass interference call and UCLA settled for a 35-yard field goal by freshman Ka’imi Fairbairn.
While Hundley’s arm has done the majority of the work, Nebraska junior quarterback Taylor Martinez gashed the Bruins with his legs, running 92 yards for a first-quarter touchdown. Martinez was 13-for-17 throwing the ball, passing for 149 yards and adding 101 rushing.
The Huskers tied the game on a 54-yard field goal by senior Brett Maher with no time left in the half.
