Men's soccer holds onto first-half lead to defeat Tulsa

Coming back home after a difficult East Coast road trip, the UCLA men’s soccer team got another huge lift from their true freshman goalkeeper as well as a timely strike from a substitute.

After a number of chances, UCLA finally picked up a first-half goal when junior forward Max Estrada came on as a substitute and whipped a header into the back of the net in the 43rd minute. Freshman goalkeeper Juan Cervantes made the lead stick in the second half, posting his second consecutive and career shutout as No. 14 UCLA beat visiting Tulsa 1-0 on Friday night.

Estrada’s goal came off a corner kick late in the first half, minutes after being subbed into the game. Sophomore midfielder Leo Stolz passed the ball in to junior midfielder Victor Munoz who crossed the ball into the penalty box where Estrada finished it off into the back of the net. The goal was the first of his UCLA career for Estrada, a transfer from Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif.
