The Los Angeles Lakers announced Wednesday that they signed former UCLA forward Reeves Nelson.

While Nelson’s spot on the team may not be guaranteed, I guarantee he’s a good fit for the team.

Initially, Nelson’s signing with Los Angeles may seem strange as he only averaged a little over 16 minutes per game in three games on their summer league team. A team, mind you, that starred the likes of Christian Eyenga and Darius Morris.

Nelson’s a natural fit for the Lakers, though.

The media frenzy he brings ““ following his dismissal from the UCLA team, tell-all story in Sports Illustrated and subsequent lawsuit over said story – suits the Lakers, whose attention from the media is a three-ring circus to Nelson’s sideshow.

Considering the antics of Dwight Howard and Metta World Peace, Nelson should fit right in.

On the court, Nelson’s rebounding and versatility is just what the Lakers need as they look for depth behind their frontcourt stars.

Nelson’s signing makes so much sense, and that’s really why it’s strange. Because so often in professional sports when something seems like the right move, it doesn’t happen.

But it wouldn’t be the first time the Lakers have taken a chance on a former Bruin with a troubled past and a lot of tattoos.
