USAC Recap – Aug. 7

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • Contingency allocations were approved unanimously.
  • General Representatives Yasar Mohebi and Carly Yoshida and Financial Supports Commissioner Sahil Seth were absent. Nicole Vestal, a second-year biochemistry student, served as a proxy for Mohebi.
  • Campus Events Commissioner Jan Tancinco and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Taylor Mason requested $78,000 of USAC surplus funds – leftover money from last year’s council – to partially fund Bruin Bash. The council unanimously approved the request.

Officer reports

  • President David Bocarsly said UCLA Recreation’s BruinFest will be on Sept. 28 and will include carnival games inside the John Wooden Center and on the Intramural Field. Bocarsly said he met with Student Media Director Arvli Ward about creating a USAC iPhone app.
  • Andrea “Andi” Hester, internal vice president, said representatives from council will present to students from the UCLA Freshman/Transfer Summer Program about USAC on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Lana Habib El-Farra, external vice president, said she went to the United States Student Association Congress at the University of Wisconsin from July 27 to Aug. 1. El-Farra said USSA’s national campaigns this year are focusing on student loan debt, the federal DREAM Act and shared governance of public universities in all states.
  • Kim Davis, Academic Affairs commissioner, said the syllabi preview will continue and be updated by winter quarter.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed Michael Jimenez, a third-year political science student, to the Student Conduct Committee.
  • Areli Carreon, a second-year philosophy student, was unanimously appointed to the Student Conduct Committee.
  • The council unanimously appointed Joseph Hassine, a third-year sociology student, to the Community Activities Committee.
  • Kristin Elia, a third-year political science student, was unanimously appointed to the Community Activities Committee.
