USAC Recap ““ July 24

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • Contingency allocations were approved unanimously.
  • Andrea “Andi” Hester, internal vice president, Lana Habib El-Farra, external vice president and general representatives Yasar Mohebi and Michael Starr were absent. Second-year history student Carlos Quintanilla was present as a proxy for Hester. Nicole Vestal, a second-year biochemistry student, served as a proxy for Mohebi.
  • Councilmembers discussed how to spend the upcoming year’s surplus funds, money leftover from last year’s council. Roy Champawat, director of the UCLA Student Union, said he anticipated the council would have approximately $500,000 for this year’s surplus. The council did not make any decisions regarding surplus.
  • The council approved the revised Finance Committee guidelines for 2012-2013 with a vote of 7-0-1.

Officer reports

  • President David Bocarsly said he met with student government representatives from UC Irvine and the University of Utah to learn about how their councils are structured.
  • Carlos Quintanilla, acting as a proxy for Andrea “Andi” Hester, internal vice president, said Hester met with Christine Mata, assistant dean of students for campus climate, to discuss the results of the Diverse Learning Environments Survey conducted by the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute.
  • Quintanilla said Hester met with Kristen McKinney, director of the Student Affairs Information and Research Office, about holding a campus climate event for students in the fall about the survey results.
  • Kim Davis, Academic Affairs commissioner, said she met online with individuals from the Common Collaboration and Learning Environment about allowing students to preview syllabi for classes before enrolling.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed Adiel Hernandez, a fourth-year political science student to the Community Activities Committee.
  • The council appointed Jacob Ashendorf, a third-year economics student to the position of Budget Review Director with a vote of 3-0-5.

Special Presentations

  • Kevin Uson of Pilipinos for Community Health and representatives from the Asian Pacific Health Coalition asked councilmembers to help the student groups find hypertension screening certification classes to certify the student volunteers who participate in the multiple hypertension projects on campus.
  • Patty Zimmerman, student government services manager, and Cynthia Jasso, Finance Committee chair, presented to council about the Student Government Operational Fund, which provides funding to USAC offices for office supplies, retreats and stipends, among other things.
