The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.
Agenda
- Contingency allocations were unanimously approved. Proxies cannot vote, according to USAC bylaws.
- Andrea “Andi” Hester, internal vice president, Yasar Mohebi, a general representative, Michael Starr, a general representative, Taylor Mason, Cultural Affairs commissioner and Cassarah Chu, Student Wellness commissioner, were absent.
- Avi Oved, a second-year business economics student, acted as a proxy for Hester. Nicole Vestal, a second-year biochemistry student, acted as a proxy for Mohebi.
- With a vote of 5-0-2, the council voted to suspend a section of the bylaws to retroactively fund the advertisement for the “Resolution Condemning Hate Crimes at UCLA and in Support of the Latina/o Community’s Demands” that ran in the Daily Bruin on March 15. The $1,020 will come from the 2011-2012 contingency programming fund.
- The council voted unanimously to suspend a section of the bylaws to substitute Anees Hasnain, Community Service commissioner, for Hester on the Appointments Review Committee, until Hester returns later this summer.
Officer Reports
- President David Bocarsly said he met with several UCLA administrators, including Christine Mata, assistant dean of students for campus climate. He said they discussed holding a convention this year dealing with diversity and inclusion. Bocarsly said the student events calendar, which will provide a place for student groups to advertise their events in a central location, is expected to launch Zero Week of fall quarter.
- Avi Oved, acting as a proxy for Hester, internal vice president, said the IVP office will hold a student leader networking night on Oct. 19. Oved said he met with Patty Zimmerman, student government services manager, about seeking corporate sponsorships for student groups.
- Lana Habib El-Farra, external vice president, said she will be attending the United States Student Association Annual National Student Congress in Madison, Wisconsin next week. El-Farra said her office is postponing Orientation voter registration efforts until incoming students know their housing assignments.
- Kim Davis, Academic Affairs commissioner, said she and one of her staff members will have a conference call with Common Collaboration and Learning Environment and UCLA Information Technology next week to discuss the syllabus preview program.
- Anees Hasnain, Community Service commissioner, gave a presentation to council about how the commission works.
Appointments
- The council unanimously appointed Alon Kashanian, a third-year neuroscience student, to the Student Health Advisory Committee for a two-year term.
- Fourth-year anthropology student Lauren Irwin was unanimously appointed to the Student Conduct Committee.
- The council unanimously appointed Angus Beverly, a third-year history student, to The Green Initiative Fund.
- Kathryn Sanlis, a fourth-year sociology student, was unanimously appointed to the Community Service Mini Fund.
- The council unanimously appointed Jeffrey Lin, a fourth-year microbiology student, to the Community Activities Committee.
- Fourth-year chemical engineering student Ian McRae was unanimously appointed to the Judicial Board.
