A broken irrigation line sent water flooding into walkways surrounding Rieber Hall Saturday night.

An irrigation line broke outside Rieber Hall tonight, forcing water to cascade down the walkway toward De Neve Drive, officials said.

At around 10:30 p.m., the stairs leading down from Rieber Hall to De Neve Drive and the stairs by Feast at Rieber remained closed because of the excessive flooding.

[UPDATED at 12:10 a.m.: By midnight, the flooding had stopped. Stairways were open and there were no visible signs of damage.

Mechanics said they planned to shut off water supply to the irrigation system tonight and repair the pipe later in the week, said Chuck Kane, a building mechanic for On Campus Housing.]

The water cuts will not affect the neighboring residential halls, he said.

Rose Ayers, a second-year English student, said she saw pictures of the flooding on Facebook and decided to take a break from studying to see the flood in person.

“It’s an anomalous welcome break,” she said, laughing.
