Occupied De Neve dorm room burgled Sunday morning

University police are investigating a report of a burglary in a De Neve dorm room early Sunday morning.

A UCLA student woke up a little before 4 a.m. and saw a man standing by the student’s bed in the De Neve Fir dorm room, according to a police report released Monday.

The man quickly left, and $20 was stolen from the student’s desk, the report stated.

Shortly after, a man matching a similar description was seen inside a nearby room on the same floor, according to the report. The man quickly left the room after the student there noticed him, which was around 4 a.m., the report stated.

The two incidents appear related, but police cannot confirm it was the same person at this time, said UCPD Lt. Mark Littlestone.

In both cases, it does not seem force was used to enter the room, but it also does not appear that the man in each case was invited into the residential hall, Littlestone said. He said police do not know if the bedroom doors were open, jarred or unlocked, allowing the men to enter.

Littlestone said it is rare for burglaries to take place when a student is in the dorm room ““ far more burglaries take place when a room is unoccupied.

It is a safety concern when somebody comes into a room occupied by a student, but it can also be an issue if a student comes back to a room being burglarized, he said.

Police do not know if the man in either case was a UCLA student, Littlestone said. There were no reported injuries, according to the report.

The man in the first incident is described in the report as dark-skinned with black hair, wearing a dark hoodie and blue jeans. In the second case, the man is described as dark-skinned with a medium build, wearing a green shirt and jeans, according to the report.

While there have been other burglaries on the Hill since Sunday, Littlestone said there is no indication these are related to the burglary in De Neve Fir.

UCPD recommends students always lock their doors and windows and not open doors for people they do not know. If in a burglary situation, students should comply with the person, take a detailed description of the person’s characteristics and report the situation to the police once they are safe.

Littlestone said residence hall staff has been notified of the burglaries, but all students should also be on the lookout and call police if they see anything suspicious.

Anyone with information regarding this burglary should call UCPD at 310-825-1491.
