Activists clad in white lab coats rolled out a red carpet in Meyerhoff Park and walked down it, waving and kissing dollar bills, as part of a protest against animal research this afternoon.

About 75 activists had gathered at the corner of Le Conte Avenue and Westwood Boulevard around 11 a.m., bearing signs and chanting. The protesters then began a walk toward the UCLA campus.

Along the way, the marchers stopped at research centers on Westwood Boulevard and broke into chants.

“Human freedom, animal rights,” one chant went.

The march stopped in Meyerhoff Park in front of Kerckhoff Hall, where activists proceeded to roll out a red carpet. As of 1 p.m., protesters were planning to head back toward the laboratories on Westwood Boulevard.

The march was in opposition to what activists say is inhumane treatment of animals at UCLA and in other UC research laboratories.

The university released a critical statement in response to the protest.

UCLA remains steadfast in its commitment to the legal use of laboratory animals in research for the benefit of society,” the statement read.
