Student Financial Services overpays thousands of students this week

Correction: The original version of this blog post and the original headline contained an error. Thousands of students were overpaid financial aid by Student Financial Services.

About 7,000 students were overpaid when financial aid payments were sent out by Student Financial Services this week.

At the beginning of each quarter, the university deposits funds for many financial aid recipients directly into their bank accounts.

This quarter, an error led to the overpayment of financial aid to thousands of students. In addition to the initial payment, which was sent out on Monday, some UCLA students received an additional deposit in their bank accounts later in the week.

Student Financial Services sent out two different emails to affected students on Thursday, said Steve Ritea, a UCLA spokesman.

One email thanked those students who had already paid back the extra deposit.

The other stated that the university would process a reversal of the duplicate deposit from the students’ bank accounts beginning Thursday. The email advised those students to monitor their accounts over the next few days to ensure the adjustments were made.

“We’re working to rectify the situation,” Ritea said.

The exact amount the university overpaid was not available as of Friday.
