UCLA a cappella groups Random Voices and Scattertones will be charming audiences using only their voices Tuesday night “”mdash; no musical instruments needed.

The Scattertones, one of the coeducational a cappella groups, will be the opening act for Random Voices’ annual Winter Concert.

Scatterones member and third-year communication studies student Brett Blackiston said that he is excited to perform some of the new songs that his group has been working on. He also said that the two groups have developed a rapport with one another and frequently are a source of support rather than competition.

Monica Manrique, business director of Random Voices and a third-year biology student, provides the bass and alto voice part of the all-female group, which is one of the oldest female a cappella groups at UCLA.

Random Voices hosts two concerts a year, one every winter and spring quarter. Throughout the year, the group performs at various campus events as well as at off-campus gigs including charity events, parties and weddings.

Random Voices currently includes 15 members, with six having joined the group this past fall. The Winter Concert will showcase the new talent of the group, in addition to the familiar voices of past concerts.

According to Manrique, Random Voices is expanding its repertoire; Tuesday’s performances will include songs both old and new, ranging in genre from R&B to pop. The selections will include some Beatles’ medleys, as well as a fan favorite from last year’s Spring Sing.

“With winter quarter coming to an end, the concert serves as a good source of entertainment before diving into finals,” Manrique said. “It is an opportunity to leave your books behind and take a break.”

Sheila Rouzitalab, a third-year psychology student, is among Random Voices’ newest members. She said that she had already performed at various events throughout the school year but was most excited to be performing at an event hosted by her group.

Rouzitalab said that one of her favorite songs, Lauryn Hill’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” is also among the group’s song selections, and that she is excited for the group’s hard work to pay off.

“We’ve worked very hard and spent a lot of time putting it together. It will be a short but sweet concert that I think everyone will enjoy,” Rouzitalab said.
