Letter to the editor: Keep Bruin pride profanity-free

To members of the UCLA student body:

I know that this men’s basketball season, with Pauley Pavilion under construction, has made it more difficult than in past years for students to attend home games. For those of you who have been able to travel to see the team play, I want to commend you for your attendance and your excellent decorum at the games.

Many fans who have attended games at the various venues on the “Bruin Road Show” have pointed out to me that your support has been terrific, especially given the complexities associated with getting to and from every home game.

Coach Howland and his staff have also commented that the team has been able to feed off the emotion and the enthusiasm that you have brought to these contests, especially since returning from winter break in early January.

However, I must remind you to please not jeopardize this goodwill by using profanity and/or other crude language this Wednesday night when we host USC at the Sports Arena. That type of language has no place at a UCLA home game.

The men’s basketball team needs you to be its “sixth man.” I encourage you to wear your Bruin Blue, be enthusiastic, loud and supportive and, most importantly, have fun.

But please, please refrain from tarnishing the most basic message UCLA wishes to deliver at every level, whether at home or on the road: Our team and our fans are a class act.

Go Bruins!

Dan Guerrero,
UCLA athletic director
