President Barack Obama called on colleges and universities to cut costs and improve the quality of their programs or risk losing federal aid Friday morning.
“We can’t just subsidize skyrocketing tuition,” he said in a speech at the University of Michigan. “No matter how much we subsidize, sooner or later we’re going to run out of money.”
Obama asked Congress to steer federal campus-based aid to colleges that offer a good value education to students, while keeping tuition affordable.
However, if colleges don’t cut operating costs and improve quality, Obama said funding from the federal government would decline.
The proposal comes at a time when many colleges are increasing tuition costs in order to maintain operations. Resident tuition and fees for UCLA students have gone up 54.2 percent since 2009, according to Daily Bruin archives.
