MAUI – It’s official: the UCLA basketball team is on the islands, but more importantly, so is the Daily Bruin! The Bruins tip off at 4:30 local time, 6:30 in Los Angeles, against host school Chaminade.
We’re here in the Lahaina Civic Center, which is essentially a very nice high school gym. The only place I’ve seen more EA Sports logos is in my entertainment center at home (they are, after all, the primary sponsor of the event).
So far, Michigan has beaten Memphis, Duke has beaten Tennessee, and a Daily Bruin sportswriter has enjoyed a couple of incredible meals (Leilani’s, the Tiki Terrace, Lahaina Ice Cream Company), as well as some predictably miserable Maui weather (80 degrees, gorgeous sunrises/sunsets, it’s rough).
Anyway, we’ll be keeping you up to date with all of the action from Maui – the 0-2 Bruins are still looking for their first win of the season and this would be quite the stage to do it; if they can manage to beat Chaminade today, either Kansas or Georgetown looms in the second round. A potential matchup with Duke in the championship game isn’t out of the question. Mahalo!
