Sophomore forward Reeves Nelson has been suspended indefinitely from the UCLA basketball team by coach Ben Howland for “conduct unbecoming a member of the UCLA basketball program” after the two met privately Monday afternoon.
“This is a very disappointing situation for Reeves and our basketball program,” Howland said of the team’s leading scorer and rebounder from last season. “We have a high standard and code of conduct that our student-athletes are expected to adhere to and Reeves has fallen short of our expectations.”
The suspension comes on the heels of an 11-point loss to Loyola Marymount on Friday in which Nelson was visibly frustrated with himself and his teammates. This continues a streak of emotional play for Nelson who is widely known as a polarizing player in the program.
Nelson’s status with the team will be re-evaluated after the two have a similar meeting later this week.
