Man Man will be performing Thursday in Bruin Plaza as part of Campus Events Commission’s free concert series. Man Man’s guitarist and keyboardist, Ryan Kattner, better known as Honus Honus, spoke to Daily Bruin’s Marjorie Yan about how the band members got their stage names and what’s next for the band in the upcoming year.
Daily Bruin: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before?
Ryan Kattner: I’ll ask what their favorite band is and I’ll say that we’ll sound exactly like that. Our music sounds like the music playing on the stereo of their car and like diving off of a cliff.
DB: How did the band meet?
RK: We met through a posting on Craigslist and we were looking for people with idiosyncratic musical taste.
DB: How did you come up with your stage names?
RK: We got a book of stage names at Barnes and Noble and … we were going to go buy the new Ghostface Killah album. We just looked through it and found ones that weren’t taken already.
DB: If you could pick a band or artist to collaborate with, who would it be?
RK: I don’t know who it would be cool to work with. I’ve never been asked that question before. I would say Mark Ronson would be cool.
DB: Does the band have a particular writing process?
RK: Sometimes it’s either isolationist or some cases it’s collaborative.
DB: What can we expect from the band within the next year or so? New album? Touring?
RK: We’re going back into the hole to start working on new material and we’re trying to get a new record out next year.
