As if Trevor Bauer didn’t break enough records while he was at UCLA, he had to break another after he left.
Bauer became the first Bruin to win the Golden Spikes Award on Friday. The honor is given to the best amateur baseball player each year by USA Baseball.
The other finalists for the award were former Virginia pitcher and No. 2 overall pick Danny Hultzen as well as former Texas pitcher and No. 12 overall pick Taylor Jungmann. Bauer was selected No. 3 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“It’s validation of all the hard work, time, sweat and tears that have gone into getting me to this point in my career,” Bauer said. “But I could never have accomplished this without the help of my teammates, coaches, friends and parents who have been with me along the ride.”
