Lauren Jow, a Daily Bruin slot editor and third-year English student, has been appointed as editor in chief of the Daily Bruin for 2011-2012.
Jow was the sole applicant for the position. She was appointed Monday night by the Communications Board.
She presented an image-based platform in her application. Jow said she plans to expand visual images in the print newspaper and online in addition to public image.
“We have to be creative in the way we present news,” Jow said.
Jow joined the Daily Bruin in the fall of her freshman year as a copy intern. She recalled showing her mom the newspaper when she went home for winter break, talking about the headlines she helped write and newspaper terminology.
That showed how much she had learned in three months, Jow said.
Her learning continued as she built up her Daily Bruin career while simultaneously working as a student at UCLA.
“It’s fitting that, in my fourth year, I give back in return,” Jow said.
She views her position as a public service. Continued service to staff and community next year is her highest priority, Jow said. She aims to increase face time between The Daily Bruin and the community.
Student Media Director Arvli Ward said the Communications Board, which gave its unanimous approval, was very impressed with Jow.
“She was extremely articulate about what she wanted, how she wanted to manage and what she wanted the Bruin to be in the community,” Ward said.
The Daily Bruin has undergone a number of developments in the past year with respect to its Web departments, said current editor in chief Farzad Mashhood.
He said Jow has the chops to stay on that track.
“We jumped into a lot of changes, and (Jow) has the unique opportunity to grapple with the changes in a different way,” Mashhood said.
Jow’s was the first uncontested race in recent years. But that did not affect her energy, she said.
