Game chants are base

By Scott Smith

As a Bruin alumnus and a father of Bruins, I wish to register my dismay to the UCLA student body for the “f**k ‘SC” chants that permeated Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday night.

I detest USC more than anyone and have to endure living among the many Trojans of Orange County. I dislike their standards, values and arrogance. Yet I must say I was embarrassed as a devoted Bruin by the chants. I returned home from the game and watched the replay on television, where the chants could also be heard during the broadcast.

Coach John Wooden has been gone only a few months. Have we already forgotten his lessons and values? Had he been present, I have to believe Coach would have stopped the game, taken a microphone and addressed all of you.

Bruins have to have greater intelligence and class than to use such expletives in deriding our opponents. This is a university of substance and character.

I implore you to rise above the base behavior of this world and instead, evidence your class, education and character. That’s what UCLA stands for.

Smith is a UCLA alumnus, class of 1970.
