Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom pledged to take risks and help the University of California in the face of a $500 million proposed budget cut this morning at the UC Board of Regents meeting.

“I didn’t come here to fail more efficiently,” Newsom said in his first appearance on the board.

Newsom quipped that although he was not accepted into the UC system himself, he wants to be “reasonably audacious” in supporting the UC’s goals. He said he hopes those goals will be more than modest.

He also said he wants to partner with the UC in economic development, one of his top priorities as lieutenant governor.
