This time around, the UCLA men’s basketball team made sure it disposed of a feisty opponent from the state of Montana.
The Bruins shot 50 percent from the field and committed just 10 turnovers as they beat Montana State 75-59 on Tuesday night, in just their third game since suffering a humiliating home loss to Montana.
UCLA (7-4) got 18 points from junior guard Malcolm Lee and 15 from sophomore Reeves Nelson in a game that had its fair share of runs. The Bruins built an early 15-point lead, but then saw the Bobcats (6-6) turn that into a three-point advantage of their own early in the second half. UCLA responded with a 22-4 run that effectively sealed the outcome.
On the night that the Connecticut women’s team won its 89th straight game ““ surpassing the Division I record of 88 set by UCLA teams under former coach John Wooden – the current Bruins won their fourth consecutive contest. They close out their non-conference schedule with a home tilt against UC Irvine Thursday.
Hurting Honeycutt
Coach Ben Howland noted after the game that sophomore forward Tyler Honeycutt had sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder and would likely be listed as doubtful for Thursday’s game.
Carlino’s Way
The Salt Lake Tribune reported Tuesday that freshman guard Matt Carlino would be transferring from UCLA to BYU. Carlino played in just one exhibition game for the Bruins. He suffered a concussion, but was deemed healthy enough to play in UCLA’s games against Kansas and Montana. Carlino’s move will be official when he participates in his first practice with the Cougars. He will have to wait a calendar year before he can play in games.
