Kevin Prince

The UCLA football team received some bad news over the weekend, adding injury to its insulting 60-13 loss to No. 1 Oregon Thursday.

Bruin quarterback Kevin Prince will be out for the rest of the 2010 season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Saturday.

The redshirt sophomore had been the team’s starting quarterback dating back to last year, but an injury to his right knee forced him to miss most of August training camp and two Pac-10 games this season, including the team’s most recent contest in Eugene, Ore.

Sophomore quarterback Richard Brehaut will take over the starting spot indefinitely. Brehaut started on Thursday and has been the only other Bruin to play the position this season.

“(Brehaut) has just got to take advantage of his opportunity; you never know when it’s coming,” coach Rick Neuheisel said after the team’s Sunday practice. “I thought he was really sharp today and hopefully that will be a precursor of things to come.”

Brehaut completed 16 of his 23 passes against the Ducks on Thursday for a total of 159 yards. He threw an interception on the first possession and was sacked three times, but also scored the Bruins’ only touchdown, a 6-yard dash on the team’s final series.

UCLA (3-4, 1-3 Pac-10) is now 1-1 with Brehaut as starting quarterback, having beaten Washington State with him behind center.

Prince, meanwhile, finishes the season with 384 yards over five games, completing just 44.7 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and five interceptions.

Larimore Also Out

Middle linebacker Patrick Larimore was also added to the list of injured Bruins after this weekend. The sophomore hurt his shoulder in the loss to Oregon and an MRI on Sunday revealed it to be dislocated.

Larimore has started all seven of the Bruins’ games so far, but the injury is expected to sideline him for about three weeks, which would project a return by UCLA’s Nov. 18 trip to Washington.

The position will most likely be filled by redshirt junior Steve Sloan, who started there nine times in earlier seasons as a Bruin. Freshman Jordan Zumwalt will also see more time in replacing the injured Larimore.

“Steve has got some great experience there, so we’ll make the decision as the week goes on,” Neuheisel said.
