Stay in the athletic loop with Sports

Welcome to the 2010-2011 edition of Daily Bruin Sports. My name is Sam and I’m your Sports editor for the year. That’s right folks, there’s no getting rid of me till June no matter how much complaining you do. In all seriousness, my hope is that you won’t do any complaining and pick up our paper on campus every day.

My staff and I have been working hard during the summer to bring you up to speed with what’s going on with the sports scene at UCLA. Now that school is finally starting, we will be bringing you a daily paper with everything you need to know about UCLA athletics, as well as the club and intramural sports coverage all of you table tennis meatheads and humble flag football wizards alike crave. Because who doesn’t like to read about themselves?

Daily Bruin Sports provides you with coverage of the things happening on and around campus that you won’t find anywhere else, but we’re not stopping there. We’re also your one-stop shop for coverage of the major sports you all know and love. Enough about what we do, here are a few things that may have changed since the last time you read our paper.

Trust me, I’ve heard it: “Newspapers are dying! What are you going to do?” Here at Daily Bruin Sports, we aren’t too worried. And no, the URL is not the only change to recently take place on our website. We have an entirely new layout that reads a lot smoother than our previous one, and I encourage you to go online to check it out. Our blog (which still remains nameless, the title is open to your suggestions) will be up and running on the first day of classes, and we’re working together with our multimedia counterparts to bring you the best online reading experience we can.

Get connected, stay connected

The website and physical paper aren’t the only places you can get the news you need from us. Like our page on Facebook by searching “Daily Bruin Sports,” and follow us on Twitter @DBSports. We’re constantly updating and that’s where you should head for live game updates and breaking news.

Opinions

Are like armpits: Everyone’s got them and they all stink. OK, I would like to think the opinions in our columns don’t stink, but feel free to disagree (see bad armed forces joke below). Our football and basketball columnists don’t just sit back in front of their TVs and write down what they think. They cover the teams like nobody else can and offer up their opinions at each and every critical point in the season.

We don’t, however, only write columns on football and basketball. We seek out interesting stories on campus or things which might affect the campus community and offer opinions on those as well. You can also expect to see returning features from last year, such as power polls, Battle of the Columnists and pick ’em challenges.

We want you!

Wait, put your car keys back and stop heading to the National Guard’s recruitment office (bad jokes are my strong suit, don’t you think?). Don’t let me stop you from serving our country, but what I really want you to do is let us hear from you. Post on our Facebook, tweet at us, or e-mail us if you have a tip or idea you think we should know about, or if you just want to shoot the breeze.

Another way to let us know what you’re thinking is to comment on our articles online. We love feedback, especially from regular readers.

Thanks for reading and I can’t wait to hear from you.
