As a new school year begins, it’s a time to think of transitions.
For some of you, this will be your first experience in the wide world of college, and for others it will be your second, third or even final year.
Transitions come in many forms. Joining an on-campus organization, actively pursuing an internship or job, and living away from home for the first time are some major transitions that you may experience this year. Despite all of us being in different stages of development in our lives as students, one thing that we all have in common is the place we call our school.
Beginning with freshman or transfer orientation, you have all heard wonders about UCLA’s superb academics, brilliant professors, unmatched diversity and undying commitment to the community. Whether or not you believe those things are true, you can decide for yourself during your time here. But what is true is that you will find tremendous opportunity at this institution, no matter what your passion, personality or goals are.
The goal of the Registration Issue of Opinion is to introduce you to some of the aspects of college life at UCLA that will aid you in transitioning and crafting your identity as a college student.
One of the greatest opportunities that you will find is the freedom to have your voice heard by thousands. That opportunity begins in the Opinion section of the Daily Bruin.
For those of you returning to UCLA this year, you may notice that our section has been undergoing a transition as well. Aside from the name change (Viewpoint is now Opinion), we are also undergoing a redesign that will integrate more art, more reader-friendly content and ““ most importantly ““ more from you.
We will be reaching out to more professors, administrators and students this year for submissions. We want to hear your thoughts on current events and issues that impact UCLA. This year, the Opinion section seeks to incorporate as much content from the community as it does from our staff columnists.
We will be integrating our new Daily Bruin website with our print editions by introducing a weekly poll that will be printed on paper and available for feedback online. In addition, we will have a new print feature called “On the Record,” which will feature a different weekly current-event question answered by UCLA’s professors, researchers and experts.
Most importantly, we want to hear from you. The Opinion section is a forum for the community. Write a submission or a letter to the editor and participate in polls. Simply put, we want to know your thoughts.
As you experience the transitions this new school year presents, let the Daily Bruin join you in your journey of learning, exploration and self-discovery. And let us be the forum where you make your voice heard.
