UCPD investigating July 10 sexual assault at Gayley fraternity house

A female student was sexually assaulted at 2:50 a.m. on July 10 at a party at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house on 613 Gayley Ave.

The victim was standing on the patio on the north side of the house when a 21-year-old man dressed in jeans and a gray cardigan allegedly came up behind the student, “pushed her against the wall and sexually assaulted her,” according to university police.

The alleged suspect, who was not caught as of Thursday, is described in the police report as a man with blond hair, brown eyes and a slim build, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches in height.

Police do not know if the alleged suspect is a student and believe the victim and the suspect did not know each other, said UCPD Sgt. Robert DeFrancesco.

“It’s an ongoing investigation and we do have some leads we’re following up on,” DeFrancesco said.

The party was for a birthday, DeFrancesco said, but it is not clear whether it was hosted by the fraternity or an outside group.

“Fraternities often allow others to rent houses for parties,” said UCPD spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.

Brett Perrotta, president of the UCLA chapter of Phi Kappa Psi, declined to comment on the assault.

“We are taking a stance as a house not to comment on it until any investigation by the police is finished and we can be more sure about the details of what happened,” Perrotta said via e-mail from London.

This assault came almost a month after the sexual battery that took place on June 13 when a female student was walking eastbound on Ophir Drive from Veteran Avenue at 1:45 a.m.

The student was on the phone when she was approached by a man about 22 years old, who allegedly pushed her against a telephone utility box and fondled her breasts after she repeatedly ignored him, according to the police report.

The alleged suspect in the June incident is described in the police report as a Hispanic male with black hair, brown eyes and a goatee, a different description from the Saturday assault.

This case is also under investigation as of June 13, according to the police report.

Greenstein reminded students to take precautions when going out, including drinking moderately to retain faculties and watching out for friends.

Anyone who has information regarding the June 13 battery or the July 10 assault should contact UCPD at 310-825-1491.
