UCLA women’s golf in fourth place after battling weather delays

They say lightning doesn’t strike the same spot twice. But it did Wednesday in Wilmington, N.C., where the UCLA women’s golf team was playing round two of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Second-round play was delayed because of lightning at the Country Club of Landfall at 1:49 p.m. Play resumed an hour later, only to be suspended again at 3:28 p.m. for 50 minutes.

Top-ranked and top-seeded Bruins were able to finish before tournament play was halted at 7:27 p.m.

UCLA had to battle weather problems and saw a slight drop on the leaderboard, shooting a team total of 292 (+4). Stuck in a three-way tie for third Wednesday, the Bruins currently sit in fourth at 580 (+4) on the tournament.

The best finisher in the first round, 2008 national champion USC held its lead after the second round, following an even-par performance on the round. The Trojans hold a seven-stroke lead on Alabama, who also shot even par at 288 for second place. Only one stroke behind Alabama is Purdue, currently in third.

In the individual competition, four Bruins are currently tied for 29th on the tournament. Sophomore Stephanie Kono and freshman Tiffany Lua shot 71 (-1) Wednesday to total 147 (+3) on the tournament. Senior Sydnee Michaels and junior Glory Yang shot 74 (+2) and 76 (+4), respectively. Michaels and Yang are also tied for 29th.

Sophomore Brianna Do, who fired a 68 (-4) to tie for fourth in round one, shot an uncharacteristic 82 (+10) in Wednesday’s round.

The Pac-10 continues to excel, with the conference boasting four of the top six teams after two rounds. Arizona State and Arizona are directly behind UCLA. Meanwhile, Sun Devil freshman Jennifer Johnson leads the individual competition after shooting a 70. She holds a one-shot lead over USC’s Jennifer Song.

Second-round play will resume at 7:30 a.m. today, and third-round competition will begin about one hour after the second round finishes.
