A water line broke under Bruin Walk early Saturday morning, causing muddy water to flood Bruin Plaza and surrounding buildings.
A section of Bruin Walk slightly north of Ackerman Union is currently blocked off as workers dig up the pipe, said Leroy Sisneros, director of UCLA Facilities Management.
The area will be closed for up to two weeks, Sisneros said. Foot traffic is being redirected to the bike path that runs parallel to Bruin Walk.
Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, the 8-inch water line broke, and 6-8 inches of muddy water flowed beyond Bruin Plaza into the J.D. Morgan Center, Ackerman Union, the James West Alumni Center and up to the walkway of Pauley Pavilion, Sisneros said.
No memorabilia or merchandise was damaged, but there is moisture and mud in the floors, Sisneros said.
Work began on Saturday to clean and dry the buildings and will continue for a few days, after which Sisneros said he will assess damage to the floors and possibly to the walls.
Sisneros said he does not know how long repairs will take or how much they will cost.
Because of the flooding, various events and lectures have had to be postponed or cancelled in the James West Alumni Center, said Burke Anderson, a reservations manager.
Sisneros said large floods similar to this one usually occur about once a quarter.
Coincidentally, two smaller floods occurred on other parts of campus on Saturday as well, in Young Hall and the Neuroscience Research Building, causing slight damage to the ceilings affected and the carpets of some offices, he said. The three incidents were completely unrelated.
