The No. 12 UCLA men’s golf team tried its luck in Las Vegas, and even though the Bruins didn’t hit the jackpot in Sin City, they did come out with a victory at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.
Posting a final-round score of 299 (+11), the lowest team score on the day, the Bruins caught up to tournament leader and host No. 19 UNLV, which recorded 306 (+18) on the day. Both teams notched a final tournament score of 899 (+35) to share the tournament title.
Third-place finishers No. 18 USC and No. 3 Texas A&M posted third-round scores of 305 (+17) and 306 (+18), respectively, to finish at 908 (+44). No. 16 Texas Tech rounds out the top five finishers in the tournament with a total team score of 911 (+47).
In the individual competition, UCLA’s top finisher, freshman Pedro Figueiredo, fired an even par 72 on the third day to total 223 (+7), good for an eighth-place tie in the tournament. Sophomore Gregor Main, who carded 77 (+5) in the final round, placed 11th with a final score just two strokes behind Figueiredo’s score. Sophomore Alex Shi Yup Kim recorded 79 (+7) on the day to finish tied for 19th at 228 (+12) on the tournament.
Only one stroke behind Kim in the tournament, freshman Pontus Widegren posted a round of 74 (+2) to come in at a tie for 21st. Junior Connor Driscoll carded 76 (+4) in the final round to tie for 35th at 233 (+17).
The win is UCLA’s second of the season. The Bruins captured their first tournament title last month at the Battle at the Beach, held at the Pelican Hill Golf Course at Newport Coast.
