Divers unable to advance to NCAA Championships

UCLA’s divers saw their season come to an end Saturday in Austin, Texas, at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships, as all four were shut out from advancing to the NCAA Championships.

Juniors Karina Silva and Laura Winn, two of the top competitors in the 16-diver field on tower, could not find the form that catapulted them to career-best performances two weeks ago. Winn finished in sixth with a combined score of 508.00 points (244.05 prelim, 263.95 final), while Silva finished eighth with 493.50 points (241.50, 252.00).

Silva and Winn both came off of impressive individual performances at the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash., two weeks ago. Silva broke the conference record on tower with a score of 312.70, and Winn set a personal-best mark of 265.40. On Saturday, however, three Pac-10 competitors swept the top of the tower standings: Elina Eggers of Arizona State (612.30), Meg Hostage of Stanford (545.25) and Victoria Ishimatsu of USC (525.00).

Winn led the way on the 3-meter springboard, finishing 10th overall. Freshman Michelle Vale, competing in only platform events, finished with an 11th-place finish on 3-meter.
