UCLA men’s soccer finishes regular season in 1-1 tie against San Diego State

The UCLA men’s soccer team concluded its regular season on Saturday night with a 1-1 tie against the San Diego State Aztecs. This is the second time the two teams have tied on the season, having played to a 2-2 draw back on Oct. 11 in San Diego.

In addition to being the last match of the season, it was also the concluding Pac-10 contest of the year for No. 10 UCLA. On Nov. 8, the Bruins wrapped up their second consecutive Pac-10 title with a 2-1 win over the Washington Huskies at Drake Stadium.

Saturday’s match, which served as senior night for UCLA, was a defensive struggle to say the least. The game’s first goal came in the 74th minute on a shot by the Aztecs’ Matt McManus that ricocheted off a Bruin player and into the UCLA goal. But shortly thereafter, in the 84th minute, Bruin senior midfielder Kyle Nakazawa tied the score, sending the match into overtime, where neither team was able to break the tie.

Next up for the Bruins, who finished the season with an overall record of 10-3-4 and a Pac-10 record of 5-1-4, is the NCAA Tournament. UCLA is guaranteed a berth in the tournament after capturing the Pac-10 crown, and Monday they will learn what seed they’ve earned in the 64-team field.
