UCLA women’s volleyball defeated the Trojans at Galen Center tonight. The win represents the Bruins’ first win in USC’s arena and continues UCLA’s current six-game winning streak.
The No. 7 Bruins beat the Trojans in five sets, 25-17, 14-25, 25-16, 17-25, 15-12, in front of 4,619 fans at USC.
In a dramatic fifth set that featured boos from the home crowd and a yellow card handed to USC coach Mick Haley, the Bruins came out on top 15-12.
Despite two points in a row by USC outside hitter Alex Jupiter, who led the match with 22 kills, the Bruins came out of a time-out to win on an Amanda Gil kill.
Freshman middle blocker Gil finished the match with 16 kills and a .560 clip.
In a tight fourth set with five ties and two lead changes, the Trojans were led by sophomore outside hitter Alex Jupiter’s eight kills to win 25-17.
In the third set, the Bruins opened up an early lead. With the Bruins up 12-7, USC had already burned through their final time-out of the set.
UCLA did not let up from there, pouring on the kills to win the set 25-16 and hitting .333 as a team while USC hit only .054.
The second was almost the opposite of the first. The UCLA offense was anemic in the second set as they managed just nine kills with seven errors to USC’s 15 kills with 2 errors. The Trojans took that set 25-14.
The Bruins took the first set 25-17, led by seven kills by redshirt senior opposite Kaitlin Sather.
NOTES: The five-set match is the second in a row at Galen Center for the UCLA-USC rivalry. The Bruins lost last year … The Bruins improve to 3-0 in five-set matches in the Pac-10.
