No matter the skill set, UCLA students have plenty of opportunities to play competitive sports.

In lieu of signing up for an NCAA team, students, as well as faculty, staff and UCLA Recreation patrons, have the opportunity to participate in intramural sports for fall quarter.

UCLA Recreation offers six sports this quarter. Flag football, 3-on-3 basketball, volleyball, singles tennis and indoor soccer are all part of quarter-long leagues, whereas kickball will be a weekend tournament.

The team leagues ““ flag football, basketball, volleyball and soccer ““ cost $40 per team. Individuals can also sign up as free agents and be assigned to a team for $5. The singles tennis league costs $15 per person, and the kickball tournament requires a $20 fee.

The most popular of the sports, flag football, offers several leagues: two levels of independent men’s teams, one independent women’s league, a co-rec league, ORL leagues for men, women and co-ed teams, two fraternity leagues, one sorority league, and a league for graduate students, faculty and staff.

According to UCLA Recreation, people interested in forming IM teams must sign up at the cashier on the first floor of the John Wooden Center by Oct. 6.

However, the more popular divisions in most leagues, such as the independent division, often fill up days before the deadline.

After paying the fee and signing up for a team, one team representative must attend a manager’s meeting at 8 p.m. on Oct. 7.

The regular seasons will last four weeks between Oct. 11 and Nov. 6. Playoffs begin shortly thereafter and each league determines its champion by Dec. 2.

The kickball tournament is scheduled for Oct. 10 and will be self-officiated.
