Councilmembers from the undergraduate student government unanimously approved two resolutions at Tuesday’s meeting, one in support of the faculty walkout scheduled to take place today, and the other for the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act.
The resolution in support of the walkout is more UCLA-specific than that passed by the University of California Students Association and calls for undergraduates’ support and action, External Vice President Susan Li said.
The DREAM Act resolution is similar to the one that was passed by councilmembers last year, said Undergraduate Students Association Council President Cinthia Flores, a primary sponsor of the resolution.
The act would provide a pathway to citizenship and access to higher education for undocumented students, she said.
The council also approved contingency allocations for student group requests for food funding, with two opposed and one abstention.
The contingency fund is a supplemental fund for student groups to apply for when original funding is not sufficient.
The fund was recently opened to student groups to request money for food for events. The logistics and language have been debated over the past several meetings by councilmembers.
Internal Vice President Shahida Bawa, a sponsor of the change, said that it is still a pilot program and that she hopes the details will be hashed out soon, given the number of contingency applications.
The members voted to lower the maximum amount for each meal that groups can request per person, from $5 for light refreshments, $10 for breakfast, $20 for lunch and $30 for dinner, to $5, $10, $10 and $15, respectively, which they established at the Sept. 8 meeting.
USAC meetings are held every Tuesday night in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students who wish to attend. Meetings begin at 7 p.m., but guest seating is limited.
