Coverage that’s clean, complete and fast

Welcome to Daily Bruin Sports 2009-2010, I’m the Sports editor, aka your friend, Farzad.

I, along with the rest of our dedicated staff, have been working hard over the summer and will continue working hard throughout the year to bring you exciting new content, as well as our consistent coverage of UCLA sports.

I want to take time to introduce a few new changes you should look for in this year’s Daily Bruin Sports section.

Twitter: We jumped on the bandwagon back in mid-March with the Pac-10 Men’s Basketball Tournament, but it’s really been catching on this summer. Every football and men’s basketball game (as well as most of the other NCAA sports) will be updated with tweets straight from the press box, and we will be keeping you up to date with the latest breaking news on our Twitter. Our URL is twitter.com/DBSports. Follow us.

Online-first production: It always seemed weird to have to wait until Monday to read about Saturday’s football game, didn’t it? That’s over. Check dailybruin.com immediatley after each game for a brief recap of the game. Monday’s story will take a more in-depth look at the game.

But this online-first business is not just for football. Our revamped Web site (dailybruin.com/sports) will have the nightcap for all sports and our paper the next day will showcase the full story.

We’ve been experimenting with this all summer with our LA Tennis Open coverage, Inter Milan and FC Barcelona coverage, women’s and men’s soccer games, and mid-week reports on the football team. With fall quarter starting, we certainly don’t intend to stop; keep checking our Web site for the latest sports news.

More club and intramural sports coverage: On top of providing you with full coverage of UCLA’s 22 NCAA sports, we will be diversifying our content with more coverage of the numerous club sports and recreational activities.

From the Muay Thai story in this issue to the stories we did on the Marina Aquatic Center activities over the summer to articles we will work on about club teams, our coverage is not just limited to the university’s NCAA sports. Student-athletes are student-athletes and we will tell their stories.

Your feedback: With our new Web site allowing readers to comment on articles, we can better see what topics strike a chord with the UCLA community and provide more coverage of that.

You: Fall quarter always brings a crowd of nearly 8,000 new undergrads (freshmen and transfers), each of whom have a unique perspective on sports and life. My hope is that we can connect with the new and old of UCLA (all 39,650 of them) with the stories we tell.

I hope you enjoy our registration issue and keep up with Daily Bruin Sports in the coming year.
