Night Powell will no longer be offered to UCLA students, according to a UCLA University Librarian blog post.
The cutback in library hours is among other cost-cutting techniques UCLA students and community members must endure because of difficult economic times.
The UCLA Library is required to reduce its operating budget by $1,830,021, leading to the downsizing of library resources, according to the blog post.
The blog lists reductions in new material acquisitions, a reduction in service hours and a reduction in the number of service outlets or branches on campus, along with other internal expenses as a means of trimming costs.
A change that may most affect students is the reduction in hours.
According to the blog, hours will be reduced in the Biomedical Library, College Library, Science and Engineering Library in Boelter Hall, and the Charles E. Young Research Library. The libraries will now be open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will be closed on Saturdays and open on Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.
Another big change is the possible closure of two libraries on campus. According to the blog, “study teams will be appointed to examine the service and collection issues associated with closing the Arts and Chemistry libraries.”
But the library is nevertheless recruiting a director of special collections, according to the blog posting, though recruiting has been limited to “a very few critical positions.”
