Torrance native Kim is eliminated by Australian Guccione, who will face second-seed American Mardy Fish in the second round.

Jesse Levine def. Bobby Reynolds 6-2, 6-3

The 21-year-old American eliminated American Reynolds, a six-year ATP veteran. Levine will face top-seed Tommy Haas of Germany in the second round.

Match of the day:

Robert Kendrick def. Vincent Spadea 6-0, 6-0

In the third double bagel (two 6-0 sets) in LATO history, Kendrick, the former Washington Husky and Fresno native, easily takes fellow American Spadea. The only other two were in 1969 when former Bruin Arthur Ashe defeated Joaquin Loyo-Mayo in the second round and John Frawley took down Mel Purcell in the second round of the 1984 tournament. Kendrick will face fourth-seed Dudi Sela of Israel. Kendrick’s win is also the fourth double bagel on the ATP tour this year. There were none in 2008.

Carsten Ball def. Donald Young 6-3, 6-0

Ball, the Newport Beach native who competes for Australia, defeats 20-year-old American Young in a qualifying match.

Josselin Ouanna def. Dusan Vemic 6-3, 6-2

In the first match without an American, the French Ouanna eliminates Serbia’s Vemic in straight sets to also qualify for the singles draw.

Ryan Sweeting def. Prakash Amritraj 7-5, 7-6

In the longest match of the day, the United States’ Sweeting struggles to defeat former Trojan and NCAA Champion Amritraj of India in a qualifying match.

Alex Bogomolov Jr. def. Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-2

The American “Bogie” struggles in the first set but eventually takes down India’s Devvarman in a qualifying match.
