A man accused of threatening to cause harm to himself and others was wandering around campus Wednesday night. He has now been detained, according to university police.
The man, who police described as intoxicated and suicidal, was located and arrested on Hilgard Avenue. Although he had claimed to be carrying a weapon, he was not armed when police found him, said UCPD Capt. John Adams.
As a precaution, police temporarily locked down several areas on campus, including the Wooden Center, while they searched for the man.
“A cop with an assault rifle and two other officers came by and told me to lock the doors and not let anyone leave the building,” said John Scheerer, the Wooden Center building supervisor at the time. Scheerer said he eventually called UCPD and was told the incident had been resolved. The center has since been reopened.
Police declined to provide any further details because of the ongoing nature of the investigation.
