This quarter’s Undie Run will begin at the intersection of Gayley Avenue and Strathmore Drive, according to Tim Mullins, the recently elected undergraduate student government facilities commissioner.
The recently revised route agreed upon by administrators and the Undergraduate Students Association Council in fall quarter of 2008 will survive as the route this quarter, as it did last quarter.
Students will head east on Strathmore Drive, turn north on Westwood Plaza and run toward Bruin Plaza. Then, instead of running up Bruin Walk toward the College Library, as they have in prior years, students will head west to the Intramural Field.
“Instead of Royce Quad, we chose the Intramural Field because it’s a large, contained, well-lit space with little property to be damaged,” said Robert Naples, associate vice chancellor and dean of students.
Naples and Nancy Greenstein, director of police community services for university police, expressed concerns about student injuries and property damage.
Several USAC members, Naples and Greenstein recently attended a meeting to discuss issues of the UCLA tradition.
Those problems have included the participation of non-UCLA community members, damage to the campus and the cost of the event for the university, which can amount to thousands of dollars in repairs.
Campus officials have warned that the finals week run may not survive in the future.
According to a statement from Mullins, Naples said, “Each Undie Run could be the last.”
