The California Supreme Court ruled to uphold Proposition 8, an amendment to the state constitution that bans same-sex marriage and defines marriage to be between a man and a woman, at 10 a.m. today.
The ruling determined that the marriages of 18,000 couples who were married before the November election will remain legal under the state’s jurisdiction.
The court voted 6-1 on the constitutionality of the proposition, but it ruled unanimously to keep the formerly made marriages intact.
Won Together, a student-run organization in support of overturning the proposition, will hold a protest and rally at 4 p.m. in Bruin Plaza today. Students will march to the federal building to protest the court’s decision.
Following that, a number of rallies and protests will be held throughout Los Angeles.
