Top Portuguese player signs with UCLA golf

The UCLA men’s golf team will welcome a new member to its roster come fall 2009.

Pedro Figueiredo, a top-ranked junior amateur player, has signed a National Letter of Intent to go to UCLA.

“Pedro will be a great addition to our program,” UCLA men’s golf coach Derek Freeman said in a release on

UCLABruins.com. “He is a solid student and has intimated to me that education is important to him. On the golf course, his record speaks for itself. We are excited that he has chosen to play his college golf at UCLA.”

Figueiredo is 111th in the world in amateur golf. The Portugal native is also the No. 1 amateur in his country.

At 17, Figueiredo is a three-time Portuguese Player of the Year and three-time Portuguese Junior of the Year.

Figueiredo has also amassed an impressive resume with top finishes in many tournaments throughout Europe over the last few years.

He won the 2008 Portuguese, Irish and British Open Amateur championships. He also reached the quarterfinals of the 2008 British Amateur. In the Swiss Amateur, he finished second. He was a semifinalist in the Spanish Amateur in 2007.

The American Junior Golf Association ranks Figueiredo 30th among amateur players even though he has competed in few tournaments in the United States. He placed third in the 2008 Jr. Players Championship and third in the 2007 Jr. Orange Bowl.
