Modifying the Foundations of Society and Culture General Education requirement to include a new diversity requirement is a praiseworthy effort to compel students to think from different perspectives.
As the only UC without a diversity requirement, it’s about time the Academic Senate and university administrators refined the college requirements to reflect a commitment to providing a more varied education.
Since the proposal does not change the number of units required, the additional burden on students is minimal.
It is commendable that the university is trying to expand on and refine an existing requirement instead of creating a new one, but the proposed requirement would not bring about any substantive change in curriculum, and the proposal overlooks larger problems that face the university, such as over-enrollment. By tacking on yet another requirement, students lose some flexibility when choosing classes.
Despite these oversights, the diversity requirement has the potential to make GEs more comprehensive and inclusive and to produce more broadly educated students.
