Olympic gymnast verbally commits to UCLA

Olympic gymnast Samantha Peszek has verbally committed to enroll at UCLA in 2010 and compete for the Bruin gymnastics team, USA Gymnastics confirmed Tuesday.

Peszek won a team silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing as a member of the U.S. Olympic Team. She earned gold medals as a member of the team in the 2007 World Championships and the 2007 Pan American Games.

Peszek, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., said that she is thrilled to compete for the Bruins.

“I visited several schools and UCLA was just a perfect fit for me,” Peszek said in a statement. “I’ve wanted to compete for UCLA and live in L.A. for a while, so it’s a dream come true.”

She hopes to compete for Team USA at the World Championships 2009 in London.

Peszek also plans to compete as an individual in the 2009 Visa Championships in Dallas this August. She currently trains with Marvin Sharp at Sharp’s Gymnastics Academy.
