Parts of Le Conte and Gayley avenues were closed off from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday because of a bomb scare.
Ted Ferrouillet, a Los Angeles Police Department officer, said a backpack was left outside a business building on Le Conte Avenue. Someone called the university police, who called the bomb squad.
“They X-rayed it, and it was just a backpack,” Ferrouillet said.
Both auto and pedestrian traffic were redirected while the police investigated the backpack. Another officer on the scene said the backpack had been left outside of the Jews for Jesus building. He guessed that it probably belonged to a homeless person who had accidentally left it there.
