Editor’s Note

The recession has affected all of us in one way or another. Whether someone you know has been laid off, or you’re affected by the state budget problem that’s sure to hit our campus hard, there is no way to get around the fact that these are hard times.

But hardship can inspire creativity and artistic resurgence, so this week, we plan to look at the recession as it relates to the arts: music, theater, film, nightlife and visual arts.

We can ask what’s shutting down due to the economy, but it’s equally important to ask what’s flourishing in this period, when we need cultural stimulation more than ever.

Pain breeds art, and this recession has resulted in pain for many.

We hope to dig deep enough to bring you answers and, in some places, a silver lining.
