Chancellor Block to speak at Town Hall today with staff, faculty

Chancellor Gene Block will take part in a Town Hall today with UCLA staff and faculty from noon to 1 p.m.

Taking place in the Faculty Center, the Town Hall is an annual event hosted by the UCLA Staff Assembly. The event serves to answer staff and faculty members’ questions and concerns as well as to allow Block to discuss topics directly with the staff.

Kyrie Bass, the president of the Staff Assembly, will serve as the Town Hall’s facilitator. She said there are a wide range of talking points that will likely come up today, especially but not limited to the current economic climate.

“We just had a budget town hall, but I’m sure there are still questions about the budget and the economy as well as sustainability and diversity,” said Bass, who also serves as the marketing and public relations manager for UCLA transportation. “One of our big things is how do we motivate staff during these difficult economic times.”

Lubbe Levin, the assistant vice chancellor for Campus Human Resources, also listed the chancellor’s initiatives for the campus as a likely topic of discussion, in addition to the budget. Some of these initiatives, according to Levin, include community and civic engagement, emphasis on staff diversity, and especially sustainability.

“That’s an important initiative,” Levin said.

According to Bass, other possible topics include the rumors on furloughs, while Levin listed long-term projects, such as looking into childcare programs and additional housing opportunities in the area.

Bass encouraged interested participants to attend, even if they were not able to get a ticket before the event sold out earlier this month.

“It’s a great opportunity because staff has a chance to hear from the chancellor directly about what he’s thinking,” Bass said.
